we were walking the freedom trail in boston when i spotted these towers across the street… and i had to go to them. at first i didn’t realise what it was (i had made a shortcut through a hedge to get there!). i was just loving the light, the glass, the lines. and then i started to read. and i was stunned. i was in the most beautiful memorial i’d ever seen and it was dedicated to the holocaust.
if you approach the memorial correctly (!!) you walk along a black path, across the word “remember” and enter into the first of six towers that represent the principal death camps. six million numbers are etched into the glass of these towers and smoke rises from the bottom of each. it is so surreal and powerful when you realise the significance of each element that makes up this place.
and the words. wow.
